La Galerie Davide Di Maggio, dopo la mostra di Milano nel 1999, presenta a Berlino Jean- Michel Basquiat, “Painting – Drawings” and “Downtown 81”.

Rimane dunque un'occasione rara raccogliere le opere di una delle figure più controverse degli anni '80, interprete del graffittismo metropolitano di periferia, della subcultura di strada e dell'allora diffuso spirito multietnico, un'autentica leggenda elevata al rango d'icona. Basquiat incarna la figura del genio isolato dalla mediocrità che vive seguendo solo il proprio istinto e nessuna regola, disposto a sacrificare qualsiasi cosa pur di realizzare i propri sogni. È un'eroe post postmoderno che colpisce profondamente l'immaginario collettivo contemporaneo. A quasi vent'anni dalla sua morte i giovani d'oggi continuano ad accoglierlo come un idolo intramontabile, quasi fosse una rock star maledetta, una liccicante meteora alla stregua di Jim Morrison o di Ian Curtis.

Attraverso alcune opere su tela, molto significative e una selezione di disegni su carta, la Galerie Davide Di Maggio rivive la sua pittura nervosa e palpitante, l'irruenza, l'eclettismo e la feroce energia, le radici afroamericane, il particolare rapporto con la scrittura, la passione per la musica, i cartoon, la moda, le donne.

Solo in occasione dell'inaugurazione sarà inoltre proiettato il film Downtown '81, girato dal cineasta ticinese Edo Bertoglio nel 1981 e diretto da Maripol, proprio nei quartieri caldi della New York di allora. Artista, musicista e poeta, Jean-Michel Basquiat qui interpreta se stesso. Si tratta di un lavoro che ha avuto varie traversie e solo negli ultimi tempi è apparso prima ai festival di cinema, quindi in distribuzione e in home video. Il film, che racconta una giornata tipo dell'artista allora appena diciannovenne, è un suggestivo scorcio sul panorama culturale della new York degli anni ottanta, il ritratto di una città fertile e vivace.

Con alcune opere molto importanti la Galerie Davide Di Maggio ricrea l'atmosfera dei suoi disegni nervosi e tremolanti, la veemenza, l'eclettismo e l'energia feroce, le radici afroamericane, il rapporto speciale con la scrittura, la passione per la musica, il cartoon, la moda e le donne.

Nella sua breve vita Jean-Michel Basquiat (Brooklyn, N.Y. 1960 – N.Y. 1988) espose solo una volta a Berlino, presso la Galerie Michael Haas, pochi mesi prima della morte.

After the exhibition was shown in Milan in 1999 the Galerie Davide Di Maggio presents Jean–Michel Basquiat, “Paintings and Downtown 81” in Berlin.

This is therefore a rare opportunity to observe the works of one of the most controversial figures of the Eighties, interpreter of suburban metropolitan graffiti art, of the street subculture and the multiethnic spirit diffused in that period, an authentic legend that has later become an icon. Basquiat embodies the figure of the genius, isolated from mediocrity, who lives following only his own instinct and no rules, willing to sacrifice anything to make his dreams come true. He is a postmodern hero who has made a deep impression on the contemporary collective imagery. Almost twenty years after his death, the youths of today continue to admire him as a timeless idol, almost as if he were a damned rock star, a bright comet not unlike Jim Morrison or Ian Curtis.

During the exhibition opening a movie shot precisely in those years in the bustling precincts of New York will be shown it is a matter of Downtown ‘81, shot by the movie maker Edo Bertoglio from Ticino in 1981 and directed by Maripol. Artist, musician and poet, Jean-Michel Basquiat here appears as himself. It is a matter of a work that has gone through various misfortunes and that has only recently appeared, first at movie festivals and then in distribution and home video. The movie, that tells the story of a typical day in the life of the artist, at that time only nineteen years old, is a fascinating glimpse of the cultural scene of New York in the Eighties, the portrait of a fertile and vivacious city.

Through some very important works on canvas the Galerie Davide Di Maggio recreates the atmosphere of his nervous and palpitating painting, the vehemence, eclecticism and ferocious energy, the Afro-American roots, the special relationship with writing, the passion for music, cartoons, fashion, women. 

In his short lifetime Jean-Michel Basquiat (Brooklyn, N.Y. 1960 – N.Y. 1988) showed only once in Berlin, at the Galerie Michael Haas, a few months before his death.

Nachdem die Ausstellung 1999 in Mailand gezeigt wurde, präsentiert die Galerie Davide Di Maggio Jean-Michel Basquiat, “Paintings and Downtown 81” nun in Berlin. 

Dies ist die seltene Gelegenheit, die Arbeiten einer der kontroversesten Figuren der achtziger Jahre zu sehen: ein Graffiti – Künstler des großstädtischen Untergrunds, der das Lebensgefühl der Subkulturen der Straße und der multikulturellen Gesellschaft zum Ausdruck brachte, eine wahrhaftige Legende, die zur Ikone erhoben wurde. Basquiat verkörperte die Figur des Genies, fernab von der Mittelmäßigkeit, das seinen eigenen Instinkten und Regeln folgt, bereit, alles zu opfern, um seine Träume zu verwirklichen. Er ist ein postmoderner Held, der einen starken Eindruck in der zeitgenössischen Symbolik hinterlassen hat. Auch fast zwanzig Jahre nach seinem Tod ist er noch immer ein Idol für die Jugend, als wäre er ein damn rock star, fast so wie Jim Morrison oder Ian Curtis.  

Zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung zeigt die Galerie den Film „Downtown '81“, unter der Regie von Regisseur Edo Bertoglio im Jahre 1981 von Maripol produziert, der exakt jene Jahre in den hektischen Straßen von New York beschreibt. Jean-Michel Basquiat spielt sich selbst, den Künstler, Musiker und Dichter. Der Film musste einige Hürden bis zu seiner Veröffentlichung überwinden, bis er dann erstmalig auf Filmfestivals gezeigt wurde und später als Kaufvideo erschien. Der Film, der von einem typischen Tag im Leben des Künstlers erzählt, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt erst neunzehn Jahre alt war, ist ein faszinierender Blick auf die kulturelle Szene von New York in den achtziger Jahren, ein Porträt einer pulsierenden und lebendigen Stadt.  

Mit einigen sehr wichtigen Gemälden holt die Galerie Davide Di Maggio die Atmosphäre seiner kräftigen und lebendigen Bilder nach Berlin: die Vehemenz, den Eklektizismus, die wilde Energie, seine afroamerikanischen Wurzeln, seine besondere Beziehung zum Schreiben, seine Leidenschaft für Musik, Cartoons, Mode und Frauen. 

Zu Lebzeiten hat Jean-Michel Basquiat (Brooklyn N.Y. 1960 – N.Y. 1988) nur einmal in Berlin ausgestellt, in der Galerie Haas, einige Monate vor seinem frühen Tod.
