“We arrive at the final form of our work through collaboration – there is almost a third person, one that is simultaneously neither of us, but also both of us. This dichotomy of subjectivity and objectivity, proximity and distance, is reflected in other facets of the work: tension, duality and distance (often imposed by media) that we feel from the real – be it nature, one another, society, images, or our surroundings.”

The Gallery Davide Di Maggio - Mudimadue is pleased to present the first individual exhibition of Frantiska + Tim Gilman in Berlin after their participation to the last Prague Biennal and the exhibition to the Kunsthalle in Basel.

Frantiska Gilman (born in Prague in 1973) and Tim Gilman-Sevick (born in Connecticut in 1970) have worked together since 2000; they currently divide their time between Prague and New York.

Their work is principally, but not only, based on painting: according to the dictates of the new hyper-realist style, that today underscores the close links between painting, photography and the new media, the Gilmans paint the day-to-day reality as a fixed image. Portraits, persons captured in a momentary gesture, as they would appear in a snapshot, but also real and virtual spaces that almost serve as environment and setting for their potentialities. The painting of the Gilmans is therefore based on a wide range of conceptual inspirations, and may be defined as a hybrid sphere of tension that gradually come to involve other media.

Talking about how they work together, Frantiska + Tim Gilman explain that "We arrive at the final form of our work through collaboration - there is almost a third person, one that is simultaneously neither of us, but also both of us. This dichotomy of subjectivity and objectivity, proximity and distance, is reflected in other facets of the work: tension, duality and distance (often imposed by media) that we feel from the real - be it nature, one another society, images, or our surroundings.”

Frantiska+Tim Gilman sagen über ihre Arbeitsweise:" We arrive at the final form of our work through collaboration -there is almost a third person, one that is simultanously neither of us, but also both of us. This dichotomy of subiectivity and obiectivity, proximity and distance, is reflected in other facets of the work: tension, duality and distance (often imposed by media) that we feel from the real - be it nature, one another, society, images, or our surroundings".
